- Summary: Nowadays we are witnessing a transformation of the software industry that it is evolving towards service oriented architectures in all the scopes. Simultaneously, infrastructures are being developed to provide support for all kind of services, such as web services, multi-tier architectures, service bus, etc. Pioneering companies as Google has brought this vision to an extreme and offer an innumerable number of services accessible through Internet that before were only locally accessible and required to buy specific hardware and software (e. g. Google docs). The evolution of cellular telephony, mobile devices, and the wide spread of wireless networks (cellular telephony, WIFI, etc.) and the maturity of sensor and ad hoc networks, as well as the evolution of RFID technology will allow ubiquitous access to these services, and will enable the creation of new services not possible till now. For the creation of new classes of services, it is necessary the convergence of technologies coming from very different paradigms. In the present proposal we aim at developing the necessary infrastructure for the creation of new classes of services. There is a growing trend towards large scale services; on one hand, there are services like the ones offered by Google with millions of Internet users. On the other hand, there are services that will have to deal with millions of ubiquitous devices (sensors, RFIDs, cell phones, PDAs, intelligent cars, laptops, etc.). This means that the infrastructures that want to provide support for these services should be highly scalable to be able to deal with a massive number of users and devices. Given the increasing dependency of the society on the services provided by computing systems, a crucial aspect for the success of that infrastructure is the provided dependability. The goal of this project lies precisely in overcoming the scientific challenges necessary to make this vision of service oriented computing at a global scope, creating a highly scalable infrastructure that provides highly dependable services. For this purpose, techniques from different paradigms will be combined: distributed systems, ubiquitous systems, fault-tolerance, middleware systems, autonomic computing, data streaming, and high performance computing.

Large Scale Data Streaming (MS-2007-07)

- Summary: There are many data streaming applications that will have to cope with massive data streams in which large clusters will be required to be able to cope with the input data stream. We foresee two classes of applications: 1) applications with many continuous queries that can scale by distributing the queries among a pool of sites; 2) Applications with one or a few queries but very massive data that will require parallelizing query operators among a large number of sites to be able to cope with the massive input streaming data. In order to realize a data streaming system able to satisfy the requirements of these two classes of applications for very large clusters (e.g. over 100 sites) it is a real challenge from a scientific point of view. We believe that the advances in System Area Networks (SANs) will enable a new kind of distributed support for data streaming. On one hand, SANs provide high-bandwidth low latency communication that enables end-to-end inter-host memory access in the realm of microseconds. This can be exploited for fast coordination among sites and agile load balancing. On the other hand, these networks are characterized by having Network Interface Cards (NICs) with their own processor with a reasonable capacity and able to access the host memory through DMA. Our previous work enables us to foresee that the envisioned highly scalable data streaming platform can be realized.

- Summary: This project pursues to provide open-source middleware support for the creation of adaptive and composable web services. The project on one hand deals with the introduction of mechanisms for adaptability and clustering of application servers to support the creation of adaptive basic web services. On the other hand the project deals with support for composite web services with self-tuning capabilities based on awareness mechanisms that will allow the system to change different aspects of its operation according to circumstances.

- Summary: It aims to develop support for a world of user-centric services that are easy to create, share and use. The contributions of LSD in the project are mainly two:
1) Develop protocols and a system for scalable clustering support for J2EE. There is special emphasis in providing support with exactly once semantics across the application server and database tiers and how to provide replication for both tiers in a consistent and performant fashion. 2) Develop support for transactional web services. This effort is related to standardization in the area of web service. In particular, the support for advanced transactions will follow the OASIS WS-CAF standard.

- Summary: The research undertaken in the project targets to attain middleware platforms with a high degree of scalability. The LSD contribution looks at new available technologies such as high bandwidth networks and network disks and how to leverage them to boost the scalability of different middleware platforms. Another issue researched by LSD in the context of the project are correctness criteria with high consistency guarantees but that are inherently more scalable than traditional ones.

- Summary: In this mobility grant, MIDLab and LSD are cooperating in the topic of P2P networks. More concretely the research is devoted to enhance P2P networks with abstractions that enable to develop more involved decentralized applications beyond the current file sharing, content distribution or chat systems. In order to attain this goal, the research focuses on basic decentralized protocols designed for P2P networks that enable to attain application level consistency in a scalable fashion.

Middleware for Database Replication

- Summary: The aim of this project is the development of a middleware able to provide scalable eager replication of databases at the middleware level. Our current prototype works on top on PosgreSQL. The Lab has recently been awarded with a grant from Microsoft Research Ltd. that funds the adding of support for SQLServer and .NET clients. Current experiments have shown that for typical database workloads the system scales very well for a few tens of sites. We are currently enriching the prototype with online recovery to enhance its availability.

Other research lines and projects
Active Replication of Multithreaded Servers:
We are interested in achieving the replication of multithreaded computations. For this purpose we are developing a suite of deterministic schedulers that can guarantee that all replicas exhibit the same behavior despite the multithreading and without resorting to inter-replica communication.
FT-Comp: Component Architecture for Distributed Fault-Tolerant Systems
. In this project we pursue the development of components modeling distinct dependability properties and an infrastructure that enables its composition to accomodate to the different dependability requirements demanded by modern applications.
Exception Handling for Novel Applications: In this project we look at the integration of exceptions with different paradigms in modern distributed systems such as transactions, cooperative and replicated process groups, basic and composite web services. From this experience we have developed some basic techniques such as cooperative exception handling or the integration of transactional and exceptional scopes in a nested multithreaded context. This becomes especially attractive for specifying robust compositions of web services.
